We're concerned. We could not find the Sandhill Cranes when we went into the park this morning or when we returned this afternoon. They've always been in the same mile long meadow beside the Madison River, even last year. We hope they are OK.
We went over to the Canyon area, Charolette's favorite place in the park. We hiked part of the South Rim Trail we have never hiked before. We found one geocache. The sun was shining at least half the time, so we got to see all the colors of the canyon. The canyon never disappoints. It is colorful.
The Yellowstone River was first named by Europeans as la Roche Jaune, the River of the Yellow Rock, prior to 1800. The name appears to have been based on information obtained from Native Americans, not from the personal experience of the Europeans (Frenchmen). Anyway, within twenty years, it had become the Yellow Stone River. Sometime after that, Yellowstone became one word. There is a lot of yellow in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
We got back to the campground in time to do four loads of laundry. It was an enjoyable day.
